A Dangerous Church?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

This is a quote from the pastor of Life Church.tv - Craig Groschel.  He says that he was discussing church with a stranger and he said that he never went to church.  When Craig asked why we responded that he went and nothing happened.  Here is Craig response to that stranger’s answer that nothing happened.

Maybe he went to a “safe” church. In a safe church:

  • The message makes you feel better.
  • You’re never confronted about your sin.
  • No one rocks the boat.
  • You don’t have to change.
  • You may never truly encounter our Holy and Life-giving God.

When I read about the New Testament Church, it was filled with people with a dangerous faith. While we certainly should make our environments welcoming, our message should remain dangerous.

  • We’re called to leave everything to follow Christ.
  • We’re invited to believe God for the impossible.
  • We’re told to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.
  • We’re told that to find our life we have to lose it first.

There is nothing safe about that message. May our churches become a safe place to encounter a dangerous message.

Our prayer at Capstone is not to be a community that plays it safe.  We want to create a community that is full of danger and risk.  We want people to check safety and comfort at the door.  And as Craig said “May our churches become a safe place to encounter a dangerous message.”  That message isn’t one that calls for safety, but one that will mess your life up.  Here is to messy lives!

Crazy Obsessed

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

This week at Capstone we focused on elements we need to be Obsessed with as a response to God’s Crazy Love for us.  Check out the notes from this past week.

__________________________________________________________

Obsessed: to have the mind excessively preoccupied with a single emotion or topic

Obsessed about being ROOTED in Christ
Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Obsessed about being a STORY TELLER

John 1:40-46

Obsessed about being a SERVANT
Matthew 20:26-28
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Obsessed about being SALTY
Matthew 5:13
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”

Salt makes things better.  What can we make better in our lives as a response to God’s Crazy Love?

The next step for Capstone is the Fountain Inn Civic Center.  It has a 500 auditourim, several larger areas for our children, and an ability to provide a great expereice for the entire family.  Stay tuned to get updates on Capstone’s move.

Fountain Inn Community Egg Drop

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

The past several weeks Capstone has been putting together a community event for Easter.  We are now ready to shout it from the roof tops. This event will consist of games, food, inflatables, prizes, a hot air balloon, and over 2000 eggs.

We have two missions with this event:

1. We want to BLESS the socks of those who live in Fountain Inn.  One of Capstone’s purposes is to have a IMPACT in our city and bring our city together.  We want to see every race, age, economic class, and neigborhood come together.  And what would do that better than a hotair balloon and thousands of eggs raining down….Nothing!  So let the fun begin.

2. We want to bring the churches of Fountain Inn together.  This event doesn’t have our name on it. Why? Because this is a Kingdom event.  We want see the entire Body of Christ to come together to help BLESS the community of Fountain Inn.  Capstone wants to see every person be reached with gospel of Christ.  But we can’t do that alone- it will take everyone on the team to do that.  We are excited that we already have several churches who have jumped on board to help with this event.

The website will hopefully be up later this week. Stay tuned for more news on the FI Egg Drop.

Crazy Love - Why does God Love Me?

Friday, March 6th, 2009

God loves you because [ YOU ARE HIS ]

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Jeremiah tell us that God formed us and breathed life into us.  He has set us apart even from the beginning.  We are His.  We loves us because we are His creation. He is our Heavenly Father.  He loves us as Father loves their child.

His love can not be purchased or earned.  God’s love can only be giving away.  The love of God is like that of an artist who has created a master piece.  The master piece may never love the artist even though it was created by this artist - but the artist will always have a special place for his Creation.
