Adoption Impact

Guest Blogger: Julie Bagwell - Capstone Lead Team

God really knows HIS timing, doesn’t He?  I shared with our community group the word “inheritance” has a whole new meaning to me now that my Grandmother died and my brother and I are sharing in the “estate” process in place of my Dad (who is deceased). Just Saturday, we went to Asheville to “claim” pieces of furniture in the house we wanted. Along with my Aunts and Uncles we walked around with different colored sticky notes designating what we wanted. It was such a mixed bag of emotions. I felt greedy, but was reminded my Grandparents WANTED us to have and use their stuff. THEN SUNDAY, we discussed “inheritance” from a spiritual perspective and I had to ask myself….have I taken the time to “lay claim” to all the aspects of my “spiritual estate”…my inheritance from God? Again HE WANTS us to have it!! Will I take the time to “put my sticky note” on peace, joy, guidance, forgiveness…etc? It’s there for the taking! If I don’t have it, it isn’t because God is holding back…  The other awesome thing is there is enough for everyone. If my Aunt and I want the same bed, we have to negotiate and compromise to work it out. However, with God and eternal life (and all that comes with it, John 10:10), there is enough for everyone! No one has less, when He gives me my inheritance! I could SO appreciate the service on Sunday because of what I had gone through the day before.

Adopted: God’s Family

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Sunday we looked at what we actually recieve when we accept God’s invitation to be Adopted into His family. The three gifts we receive: inheritance of eternal life, guidance and discipline from our new heavenly father, and unconditional Love.  These three things should rock our world! Especailly when we look what we came out of (Ephesians 2).  When sin entered man’s heart Earth became a dark and lonely orphanage.  We lay in cribs filled with waste and vomit yet when the Father picks us up to take him with him - we reach back for the mire we came out of.

Being a part of God’s Family has its benefits from the inheritance from our heavenly father which include eternal life, the stars, strength of the creator to the unconditional love that causes our hear to skip a beat.  Yet many of us in the church live like orphans never claiming the strength, power and confidence our Father has given us.

Since we were orphans but have been given a new family, God expects the same love and action from those who are his.  In two weeks we will spend time discussing our responsibilities to care for the orphans.  Next week we will be doing something we have NEVER done at Capstone. It will be some amazing Family Time at the Gathering.

Adopted Week 1: The Wild Olive Branch

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

This week Capstone kicked off our Fall Season with our new series “Adopted.”  Many ask the question is this series about the theology of adoption or the act of adopting.  The answer is both.  We believe that we can’t really understand the theology of adoption without processing the act of adoption.

The first week of Adopted was entitled “The Wild Olive Branch”.

Romans 11:17
If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root

God adopted us into His family with this act. He took a weed that has no purpose and bears sour fruit, and grafted us onto his Family Tree of Life that bears good fruit. The branch was the same the roots just changed.

One of our new pieces we are adding at Capstone this week is Land of A Thousand Hills Coffee. At Capstone we want everything we do have purpose and make an impact.  Land of A Thousand Hills provides a living wage for coffee growers in Rwanda whose lives have been devastated by civil war.  Watch this video to understand: Drink Coffee Do Good.  And make sure to stop by the Capstone Cafe for some amazing coffee and make an impact in others lives.

New Series Starting Sunday

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Sept 13th we will be starting a new series called “Adopted.”  It is based on the idea of Romans 8:15 “… you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.”  We will be looking at the history of this family and what it means to be adopted into God’s family.  We will also have some special “family” time during this series.  We will hear stories of those who have been adopted and those who brought home the orphans.  And Capstone will look at our responsibilities to care for the widow and orphans.
We really believe this series isn’t only going to change those who attend, but the world in which we live in.  You want to make sure you are at Capstone the next four weeks as we look at the theology and responsibility of adoption.

One Year Ago…

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Capstone Discovery began.  On Sept 7th 2008 we began meeting together at the Fountain Inn Activities Center with a group of individuals who were interested in starting something new.  We began not so much as casting a vision for just another church but a movement of people who are living as missionaries in our community.  Sunday we spent time reflecting in what we have seen God do in this year.  It has been amazing watching God impact lives, a community, and a group of believers in immeasurable ways. Not only did we spend time in reflection but also direction. We have just begun and we believe that our greatest days are still ahead.

Here is a video we watched while the band played “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. For us it isn’t about the destination, but the journey.

Community @ Capstone

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Sunday we had a great day talking about relationships and the importance of living in a community of faith. Our DNA is to be in community. God created us with a longing to be in relationships with others. This is especially true in our spiritual walks. The way of the Cross is way too complicated, confusing, and tiring to do it alone. That is why we offer community groups at Capstone. We want to connect people to learn from each other and build a family who doesn’t depend on self but Christ and other believers.

When we take part in Community Groups we…
are living in Community as those in the Holy Scripture.
acknowledge that we weren’t created to do this alone

We will continue sign ups over the next several weeks. Community Groups will launch on Sept 20th. Check out Capstoneblog.net this week to learn more about Community Groups at Capstone.

Capstone Serving Tour Video

Capstone Church- Areas to Volunteer from Capstone on Vimeo.

Instead of us standing in front of the crowd doing a boring job of showing all the areas to serve at Capstone we made a video tour of our areas. Our executive pastor, Chris, did a great job introducing all the areas at Capstone. If you would like to see all ministry oppurtunities at Capstone, take a few minutes to take our “serving tour.”

***Note*** First experiment with Green Screen at Capstone.
