Crucifixion Links

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Sunday during the service we mentioned how much information there was on the medicial aspects of the crucifixition.  Below you find two quick links that will have a lot of information on what we talked about at the Gathering.  At the end of each article there are also references these men used and are very detailed in these areas if you would like to dig even deeper.

Journey 4 - the Cross

Monday, March 29th, 2010

What an amazing series that we have gone through. Each week has been intense as we just carefully march through Matthew 26-27. I am amazed at the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. As Walt explained what all happened before and during crucifixion.

We walked through what was happening during the flogging and the practices leading up to the cross. “The brutality of the cross began long before Jesus was nailed to the cross.” My heart was broken as we read about how Jesus was beaten and mocked. I hope everyone got a better understanding of all that Jesus did for the glory of God. His death and resurrection brought us new life.

I want to encourage you to jump back to Psalm 22 this week. Slowly walk through and notice the things that David writes in that psalm. Notice the connection to the cross. The amazing thing about Psalm 22 is how David writes (guided by Spirit of God) about something in great detail that he had never seen. David had never seen a crucifixion in his lifetime.

Set List from Sunday:

  • Freedom is Here (Hillsong United) Hillsong United - a_CROSS//The_EARTH - Tear Down The Walls - Freedom Is Here
  • God is Alive (Fee) Fee - Hope Rising - God Is Alive
  • Forever Changed (Eddie Kirkland) Eddie Kirkland - Awake - Forever Changed
  • Rise and Sing (Fee) Fee - Hope Rising - Rise and Sing

Journey 3 - the Trial

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

We moved into week three of our Journey series. This past Sunday we looked at the Trial that Jesus went through before the cross. This series has been intense. Of course, when traveling through the last days of Jesus I don’t think it could be any less.

We saw the disciples who last week were ready to fight, now scatter and hide. We see the crowd that earlier in the week cheered as Jesus entered the city now cry out for a crucifixion. Jesus is now alone. He is about to drink the cup that has been given to him.

Walt read Isaiah 53 and connected the prophesy to Jesus before the priests. As we continue on this Journey remember that Jesus is fulfilling the will of God. It was the will of the Father to crush him (Isa 53:10). Now as we approach the cross we see the Son of God bearing the sin and shame of humanity on his own.

A reminder for parents, that next week we will be discussing the gruesome details of the cross. As we have each week, we will also being showing a clip from the Passion of the Christ movie. Your children should be dropped off at Camp Rock or Pebble Beach. We just want to let you know so that you may take the necessary precautions with your children.

We Worshiped with these songs Sunday:

  • God is Alive (Fee) Fee - Hope Rising - God Is Alive
  • Mighty to Save (Hillsong) Hillsong - Mighty to Save - Mighty to Save
  • Forever Changed (Eddie Kirkland) Eddie Kirkland - Awake - Forever Changed
  • Jesus Messiah (Chris Tomlin) Chris Tomlin - Hello Love - Jesus Messiah
  • Praise the Father, Praise the Son (Chris Tomlin) Chris Tomlin - Hello Love - Praise the Father, Praise the Son

Journey (part 2) - the Garden

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I really believed yesterday’s sermon was one of Walt’s best sermons. We don’t talk about the wrath of God too much these days. I have loved this series. We continued in Matthew 26 yesterday and looked at the scene in the garden.

Walt brought our attention to the cup that Jesus had to drink. As we read how Jesus looked for another way, and yet submitted to the Father. Amazing how Jesus, though sorrowful to the point of death, still submits to the will of the Father. So many times in my own life, I don’t see that kind of obedience, and I am not to the point of death. Can you imagine having that kind of sorrow? To have a burden that heavy?

As we examined the cup and what was in it, Walt took us to some Old Testament passages. I would encourage you to visit them this week if you have time.

“Sin cannot be erased, only transferred.” Jesus Christ drinks the cup on our behalf. Jesus displays his love and the love of the Father. In garden and on the journey to the cross we see such a strong picture of the HOLINESS of God. We see the seriousness of our sin. It took the death of the Son of God to clean us.
We worshiped corporately with these songs this week:
  • God is Alive (Fee) Fee - Hope Rising - God Is Alive
  • Hosanna (Hillsong United) Hillsong United - All of the Above - Hosanna
  • Revelation Song (Kari Jobe) Kari Jobe - Kari Jobe - Revelation Song
  • Mission’s Flame (Matt Redman) Matt Redman - Passion: How Great Is Our God - Mission's Flame

3 Ways You Can Prepare for our Easter Gathering

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

At Capstone we are encouraging our people now to start preparing for Easter. I am going to post some more ideas on my blog as we continue to approach our Easter celebration. Today I want to highlight some of the things that Walt brought up this past week.

  1. Prayer walk your neighborhoods. At least once a week, you and your family walk your neighborhood and pray for your neighbors. This is something that I should do more. So many times we come home and want to lock ourselves in and not think about “the world” anymore. As Christ-followers it should be the opposite. We should come home and at times be inviting “the world” over for dinner. We should be building relationships with those who don’t know God. Spend time praying for your neighbors.
  2. Bless Eagle Watch. We are within spitting distance of this community from the Capstone building. We are going to be intentionally blessing Eagle Watch over the next few weeks with coupons for some of the local restaurants. We will have some extra door hangers so that you cannot also do the same in your community.
  3. Good Friday Service. We will be having a Good Friday gathering before Easter. This night will be low key and we will be celebrating Communion together. I am really looking forward to this gathering. We are asking you to consider fasting that day as we lead up to our Good Friday gathering.
I am so excited about Easter at Capstone this year. Stoners, I encourage you to be praying for your community.

Journey - Part 1

Monday, March 8th, 2010

What a day yesterday as the Stoners gathered together. I love getting together with you to lift up the name of Jesus. Each week I am amazed at how God is working at Capstone as I talk to some of you.

We had a jam packed service from the standpoint of how much we had to cover. As I listened to our mission team that we sent to Haiti my heart continued to break for that country. Don’t forget Capstone, don’t forget the need there. I enjoyed getting to continue the conversation some with Marvin and Erick during small group last night.

We began a new series at Capstone yesterday. This one may be gentler on the toes than TRANSFORM or HAPPILY EVER AFTER. Walt took us through the Lord’s Supper yesterday in Matthew 26. He brought out teaching in Exodus 11-12 about the Passover and then finished as we talked about the body and the blood of Christ broken and poured out for us.

Don’t loose sight of what we remember by taking Communion. Don’t let that become just some “tradition” that the church does every few Sundays or months. Don’t let your heart and mind disconnect from what we do during that time.

Here are the songs from yesterday:

  • All Because of Jesus (Fee)
  • This is How We Know (Matt Redman)
  • Mission’s Flame (Matt Redman)
  • Jesus Messiah (Chris Tomlin)
  • Glory to God Forever (Fee)
  • No One Higher/The Stand (Fee/Joel Houston)

Happily Ever After - Part 3

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

This has been an awesome series. It has been a tough series. I have been so excited to hear how God has used the teaching of his word to cause people to rethink their lives and seek after him more. To hear the stories of families reading their Bible together and marriages that are getting closer together.

Walt preached on the subject of personal holiness. Living a life committed to Jesus Christ will bring about sacrifice.

If Christ is worth anything, he is worth EVERYTHING!

Think about that statement and the implications of the statement in our lives. We look to the cross and cling to the hope that Christ gives us there. HE IS WORTH IT. Jesus is worth your life. Jesus is worth your sacrifice. Jesus is worth your EVERYTHING.

Here are the songs that we used to worship:

  • Solution (Hillsong United) Hillsong United - All of the Above - Solution
  • All We Need (Charlie Hall) Charlie Hall - Flying Into Daybreak - All We Need
  • Revelation Song (Kari Jobe) Kari Jobe - Kari Jobe - Revelation Song
  • You Alone Can Rescue (Matt Redman) Matt Redman - We Shall Not Be Shaken - You Alone Can Rescue
  • Majesty (Delirious) Charlie Hall - Passion: How Great Is Our God - Majesty
